Coach Jay began training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) under the direction of Master Leo Dalla in 2006 and was fortunate enough to be able to stay under Dalla’s direction through all the belt levels (white, blue, purple, brown and black). At purple belt Coach Jay began teaching a class at BETA Academy in Washington, DC, where he went through an instructor certification course run by BETA Academy founder and local BJJ phenom Nakapan Phungephorn. That experience helped Coach Jay become the technical and thorough instructor that he has become known as.
Coach Jay has competed in some of the sport’s biggest tournaments, including the IBJJF Pan and Masters Worlds. He has won several medals from the NY Open, US Grappling and Copa Nova, among others.
Coach Jay is also a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), including being a Corrective Exercise Specialist and Fitness Nutrition Specialist.
Coach Jay’s goal with the BJJ program is to create an environment where students feel welcome and empowered to reach their goals, whether that is competing at the highest levels or just getting a good workout while learning some great techniques.
