There’s something about trying a sport brand new to you especially if you’re looking to branch out, try a different form of fitness, meet new people, or get out of your comfort zone. It’s not easy to walk into something new and it can feel downright weird adjusting. How do you know if you’re doing it right? If this is you right now, maybe these three thoughts from one of our BJJ coaches at Disciple MMA will help give you a little more insight on the martial art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
BJJ provides both a mental and physical workout
After you learn the foundation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and you have your escapes and underhooks down, you work towards reaching the point where you are physically conditioned. You continue pushing yourself to reach a higher level of fitness until you don’t think about how tired you are anymore. Then a shift happens where it starts to become a mental game. In other sports it can be all about the biggest and strongest guy, but in jiu-jitsu, once you reach the physical level, it becomes more about the smartest person, or maybe the craftiest most strategic person.
It takes a long time to know and learn the basics, but don’t quit
So how long will it take before you stop feeling like the new kid on the block? To keep it short and sweet, if you’re training three times per week for a total of fourteen weeks it equals up to about 4 months. So show up Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday for four months and you’ll start feeling like you didn’t know what life was like without jiu-jitsu. After all, this is a complex martial art and is also commonly referred to as human chess, but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn it. All that means is you have to show up and keep your mind open to learning new concepts.
BJJ holds a unique community
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has a strong tight knit community unlike any other sport. Mat, our BJJ coach has rolled with the equivalent of the Lebron James of the sport, and generally, not everyone can just shoot hoops with Lebron. You constantly come across a range of different people. Disciple MMA, for example, has James who is a baker and Kenny who is a pro MMA fighter; Mat doesn’t know anything about either of those things but he can still relate to each of them when it comes to training on the mat together.Jiu-Jitsu brings forward a lot of different perspectives and comes with a vast community of different people. At Disciple MMA, no matter who you are you can be sure you will be welcomed. It doesn’t matter whether you are experienced, what your fitness level is, your age or gender. Our community is ready to help you achieve your goals, whether in fitness, self-defense, weight control, or competition training (amateur and professional).
